I’ve heard the argument time and time again from parents who choose not to vaccinate their children: “If your child is vaccinated, why are you worried about him catching anything from my unvaccinated child?

To most people, this would be a pretty compelling argument. After all, my kid is protected, so who gives a lick about your kid. Neither is a threat to the other, right?

High-freaking-five for this, seriously. I get that people who don't vaccinate their children must really feel like they are acting in their child's best interest, but it is such a selfish, misinformed choice, and it puts the whole herd immunity at risk.

Not to mention, exposing a vaccinated child to an unvaccinated child who is a potential carrier does nothing to protect younger siblings in the vaccinated child's home that are too young to receive the vaccine.

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. (Much of the internet seemed to, apparently, lol.)

EXACTLY. It's a fact that a LOT of anti-vaxxers miss. And quite frankly, if they don't give a shit about their own kids catching a potentially deadly disease, I'm sure they give even less a one about someone else's. SIGH.

Sorry, you said you were from MD so I took a gander at your journal.

The link doesn't work!!! :(

And it doesn't work that way...even though my kid is vaccinated she can still get sick and all these new cases of polio and other diseases are popping up. And JUST the cost of ...1 kid gets sick they have to shut down the entire school until they make sure that no one else did and quarantine and contact everyone who this kid was contacted with...and if they were in contact with ANOTHER kid who went to ANOTHER school they have to shut down THAT school. It's insane.

My nephew(my sister in laws kid) was born with an autoimmune disorder and for children like this you have to be very careful about what vaccines that they receive, if any. WELP the idiot doctor gave him the vaccinations anyway and it nearly killed him...and now he's got a series of disorders. SO their perfectly healthy next child was never vaccinated based on the very paranoid information their father has received over time. It's...scary. And my brother in law is now a Doctor and they battle it out all the time on FB. lol.

And I feel really scared about bringing my new baby around them...but how mean would that be? I don't think the kids really understand. They've never been sick, thankfully...but it's on my mind all the time.

Whoops! Yeah, link didn't do a great job, did it. Try this one. :) (I canceled my domain name, so now some links are messed up!)

But yes, basically, I said exactly what you did: That the vaccinated crowd, via herd immunity, protects those either who can't get the vaccine due to an autoimmune issue or allergy or who aren't protected by the vaccine for one reason or another.

I hear you. It didn't really cross my mind at the time, but we took Tycho out several times when he was first born, and who knows what he could have come across in those formative months where he couldn't receive many vaccines for diseases that are sooooo contagious. It scares me now in retrospect, and I am SO glad he never contracted anything!

That link worked! Great! I'm interested in reading your thoughts too. :)

I took Beau out within days of her birth and around other people within 2 weeks but I waited for her to meet her non-vaccinated cousins until after her first rounds of shots. Still, not that that would REALLY have helped her but it was SOMETHING.

We have to get on a plane in September and again in November and I'm scared shitless of her getting something. She had a fever for 2 days once but that was because of a UTI but I'm almost certain September she will officially be sick for the first time. LOL. Especially now with this Ebola outbreak I'm freaking out. :( Grr. But you can't do anything about Ebola but still. My husband is the type "we can't hide and not live our lives" so away we go!

Awesome! :)

Haha, we did the same thing. Target the day after his birth, Washington DC when he was two weeks old or so. As far as I know, he didn't come across any unvaxxed family members, but I admittedly didn't ask, either.

Ugh, I'm sorry! I'm sure she'll be fine, but airplanes in general just... freak me out. We did take Tycho on a plane when he was three months old (and several times after that), and he did just fine, but I do understand the worry!

The Ebola thing should be okay. I'd be more concerned with more easily contracted diseases (but don't let that freak you out!!). I'm sure it'll be great and you'll have a wonderful time! :) Where are you going?

Haha yeah i had Beau during that damn polar vortex and people called me crazy for taking her out to target a week later. PFFT. She has yet to get sick. lol

Me too! I have to take a lot of xanax everytime but luckily my husband will be there too. Beau will be 8 months and she's so active and I'm worried she'll be loud and obnoxious or POOP. Like changing a baby in a pub bathroom is hard enough let alone shaking on a plane because I'm so scared LOL. My husband promised he'd do it though.

Yah...that's true...I just am a compulsive worrier. We're going to Wisconsin to see family in September, his cousin had a baby yesterday and November to Orlando...that's for work. Just found out we're having our closing party at Harry Potter world so I'm effing stoked. hahahaha.

Hahaha! So long as your husband handles it. ;) I hate flying, too, and have tried everything from Xanax to alcohol, and the alcohol admittedly worked the best, lol. Not as easy to do when you're with a baby, so that's what my husband is for as well. ;)

STOP IT. WAIT. Your work is having a closing party at Harry Potter World?! OMFG. I'd fly for that, easy!! You're going alone, right? Pop that Xanax and get you some HP goodness, girl!!

Haha right! Xanax works but I still ALWAYS get sick to my stomach. Not vomiting but just I feel gross and off the entire trip unless it's a long one and i have time to recover. WI trip will be leaving on Friday NIGHT and returning Sunday midday. Wtf. UGH. I so don't want to do this. AND I JUST GOT CALLED FOR JURY DUTY THAT WEEK. Wtf.

YAS. I. am. so. stoked!!!!! Yeah I get put up on these work trips so I don't mind it too much...plus it's a long week so it's easier to recoup before I have to actually start working. :) POOLSIDE BB! I'll be there. :)
